12 states in Nigeria operate Sharia Law in defiance of constitution – Osinbajo

LAGOS, Nigeria – Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has said that about 12 states in Nigeria currently operate Sharia Law in defiance of the 1999 Nigerian constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Osinbajo who was speaking late last night at an engagement of Christian Youths in Lagos was reacting to questions on alleged Islamisation of Nigeria.

“It is under Babangida administration that Nigeria joined OIC in 1986. Nigeria joined the islamic development bank in 2005 under President Olusegun Obasanjo and since then, every single finance minister in Nigeria is a director. About 12 states in the country operates under Sharia Law. Sharia provision in the constitution remains contrary to the constitution.”

He also decried the rumour trending on social media that he has resigned from the current administration for being sidelined in the scheme of things.Osinbajo debunked the rumour at a meeting with the Young Christian group theme, “Unveiling the Truth: An interactive session and engagement with Prof Yemi Osibajo” held in Muson center, Lagos.

The Vice President said the report on social media that he resigned was been speculated by the opposition because he couldn’t attend National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

He also debunked that President Mohammadu Buhari is planning to islamise Nigeria. He charged them never to listen to all sorts of propaganda against him and the president

Can you imagine the speculation trending on social media now that I have resigned because I was busy in my office. Must I attend every meeting? Can’t the president meet with security chief without me? They want to create tension and rift among the top officials. Don’t believe any of that, am not going to compromise my faith for any reason. Am assuring you, I remain committed to working with President Mohammadu Buhari to move this nation forward.”

He further stated that ” politicians are playing on religion and ethnics sentiments to cause division, spread hate speech through media and other forum. 

On the crisis in Kaduna, he said, “President is on top of the issue in Kaduna and all that. It is not correct to say that government is not paying attention. Terrorism is a global challenge,17 local government were in hand of Boko Haram in 2015, if you compare where we’re in 2015 to today, you will see that there are much different. Infact, in Pleateu State they celebrate long period of no crisis.”

The VP said president Buhari is the most committed people he had ever come across. “He committed to the fact that the resources of the country are not stolen. The truth of the matter is that PMB is not talking type. “
