Police, APC deny death report at Lagos mega rally

LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Police Command and the All Progressive Congress(APC) have denied media reports alleging that some people were killed at the its mega rally yesterday at Skypower ground, Ikeja.

Speaking on Star Fm, Police Public Relation Officer, Chike Godwin Oti said what happend at the rally was blown out of proportion. According to him, the APC held a very peaceful and successful rally until towards the end that armed thugs invaded the venue and caused mayhem. He said nobody died but that about three people were injured. He said those injured have been treated at the hospital.

He said the police was able to contain the incident adding that the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris has given orders to all the AIGs to ensure that no armed person is allowed into the venue of any rally throughout the federation.

Also speaking, Chairman of APC, Mr. Tunde Balogun said the rally was peaceful and that it was a celebration until thugs invaded the arena with arms and that those involved were factional members of the road transport union in Obalende that clashed with those at Oshodi.

He added that he got information about the invasion 5 minutes earlier, adding that if he was able to get such information, the Nigeria Police should have known and be able to forestall the attack.

He said the police is well prepared but that they must be proactive to avoid such incident in the future.
