MAKURDI, Nigeria – Benue State Government has arrested one herdsman and impounded about 105 cows for open grazing. The cattles were arrested while grazing in the open near Akawe Torkula College of Advanced and Professional Studies, Makurdi, contrary to the Benue State Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law.

Speaking on the development, Commander, Livestock Guards, Mr Linus Zaki identified the herdsman arrested as Kunje Saija, adding that the cattles were impounded for violating the state’s anti-open grazing law.

He said that the impounded cows will be quarantined for seven days, after which they would be auctioned, if the owners failed to pay the fines stipulated by the law.

He cautioned herdsmen against the consequences of flouting the law, and that all livestock must be catered for in ranches.
