OGBA, Lagos, Nigeria – Fire fighters from the Lagos State Fire Service today battled spiritedly to put off fire that guts a building that accomodates several companies including a furniture firm and office equipment shop at Plot 4, Aguda Road, Ogba, Lagos.

The fire which started in the morning threw the whole area into confusion, with attendant heavy vehicular movement in the area as workers struggled to take out vehicles and other valuable from within and nearby firms.

By the time the inferno was put off, workers were only able to salvage few items while the building was completely damaged structurally and probably unfit for habitation. The roof was completely consumed by the inferno, leaving the blocks hanging only on the base, which looks quite weak.

When our correspondent visited, most of the workers were still hanging around with some of the items they managed to salvage from the fire, while a truck was also spotted with workers loading some of the valuables and preparing to take them to unknown destination.

One of the fire fighters who spoke to our man said he and his colleagues fought spiritedly but that it was unfortunate that inability to get water from a nearby source rendered their efforts futile.

“We have to travel to and fro Alausa almost 20 times. We could not get water nearby”, he said. When reminded about water hydrants fitted on some of the newly constructed roads, he said, most of them are either faulty or not fuctional while many lacked water.
