LAGOS, Nigeria – Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Idris Lebo Kutigi is dead. He was 79. He died on Saturday in London after a brief illness. Born in December 31, 1939, in Kutigi, Lavun Local area of Niger State, joned the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1992 and was appointed as the CJN in January 30, 2007.




In a statement, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said it is deeply saddened by the news of the demise of eminent jurist, legal luminary and former Chief Justice of Nigeria.

According to the party, Justice Kutigi was an outstanding administrator; a fearless, impartial and firm judicial officer, who upheld justice and the law in all his assignments at the bench.

“As the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kutigi ensured the independence of the judiciary as an arm of government and contributed in no little way in providing direction to our nation at very critical moments in our national development. Beside his incisive judgments, Nigerians will always remember Justice Kutigi’s forthrightness as the Chairman of the 2014 Constitutional Conference, which made far-reaching recommendations for the development and stability of our nation”, the party said, adding that it is grief-stricken that this noble Nigerian left the stage at the time his wealth of experience is needed the most.
