SURULERE, Lagos, Nigeria – A germane initiative tagged the Sports and Books Initiative (SABI) Read-outs will for the firsr time kick off this Sunday, August 19, 2018 at the national stadium, Surulere, Lagos. The Read-outs, according to the promoter of the initiative, Alexis Onome Eborge, is a platform that brings children in secondary schools to a specific location where they read together in an environment of fun that will allow them have their say.
The Read-out platform afford the children access to extra tutorial from trained tutors in the areas of Mathematics and English Language, in sync with the national secondary school curriculum. Eborge explained that the idea is to get participants better prepared for their school work, pointing out that the job of their regular school teachers will be helped by the fact that they will come to school with a better understanding of the topics to be discussed.
The Read-outs at the National Stadium will hold on the last Sunday of every month, from noon till 3pm. Eborge further informed: “The SABI Read-outs are an off-shoot of the free-library Initiative by The NICER Project, a platform that encourages improved learning opportunities for young African children, in the understanding that knowledge means better opportunities for young people.
“The project will also eventually include skills acquisition and empowerment programmes, career counseling workshops and mentorship modules. This initial edition of The SABI Read-outs will be dedicated to children who are involved in Roller Sports in Lagos. From the September edition, The SABI Read-outs will accommodate participants from other sports”.
The criteria for participation and membership, he said, is that they must be students in secondary schools and registered members of sports clubs or under the tutelage of a recognized sports coach. The tutors and other professionals on the SABI team are all volunteers interested in giving back to help improve youth education in Nigeria. The Nicer Project and Lagos Roller Sports Association are working together on this project.
The NICER Project is headed by Alexis Onome-Egborge, a film director and editor, known for his work on TV shows such as Amaka Igwe’s ‘Fuji House of Commotion’, The Charly Boy Show & Zoomtime. He also worked in various post-production capacities on movies such as Opa William’s ‘Three Wise Men’ and Kingsley Ogoro’s Osuofial in London. Alexis is a member of the board of Lagos Roller Sports Association, as well as being a member of the board of The Edo State Rugby Association.
