IKOYI, Lagos, Nigeria – A 35 year old land grabber, Mr. Saheed Magbe has grabed to two years imprisonment for forcible entry and possession of land belonging to another person.
Magistrate S. Odusanya of Ikoyi Magistrate court sentenced him to one year imprisonment on each of the two count charge contrary to sections 52 and 53 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011. The magistrate said the judgement will sound a serious warning to other land grabbers who think they are above the law of the State.
According to the magistrate, the defendant is hereby given an option of fine of N100,000 to be paid in lieu of the two years imprisonment.She said that the imprisonment of one year each in respect of the two counts charge shall run concurrently. The complainant thanked the State government for coming to his aid and advice others to make use of the agency.
The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem said that obviously the government is pleased with the conviction, he also praised the Lagos State House of Assembly for enacting the laws and thanked the State Governor Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode for signing the laws. “When you secure conviction, that shows that the laws is working.” Adeniji also commended the Lagos State Special Task Force on Land Grabbers for the good job they were doing in the State.
