IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – Two years after he allegedly beat his wife Ronke to death, an Ikeja High Court has fixed July 3 for commencement of the trial of Lekan Shonde. Justice Josephine Oyefeso fixed the date after the matter came up for mention.
Shonde, a 51-year-old dock worker, was arraigned on one count of murder. He pleaded not guilty to the charge. According to the prosecution, led by Mrs Kofoworola Tunji-Carrena, Shonde committed the offence at 8.30pm on May 5, 2016 at his residence located at No. 3, Tiemo Close, Egbeda, Lagos.
According to court documents, Shonde was involved in a physical altercation with Ronke his wife which led to fight and consequently her death. As soon as he discovered that his wife was dead, Shonde allegedly locked up the home and fled leaving her corpse in the in the living room.
The alleged crime scene was discovered by neighbours who heard her two young children crying over the inability of their mother to answer them.
Shonde surrendered to the authorities five days later after news of the murder as well as the surrounding circumstances had gone viral on social media when it broke in 2016.
