MOSCOW, Russia– The Russian government is preparing for a grand offensive on local and international media for publishing information that government deems to be defamatory against any person or company.
This is based on a bill which the State Duma Committee on Security and Counteracting Corruption is reviewing. The bill proposes to block information defaming a citizen or a company.
According to the bill, if a person disseminates defamatory information and does not voluntary removes it within a certain time, the government will be forced to file a case before a court requesting permission for authorities to restrict access to the website in question.
Authors of the bill believe that Russian citizens have a right to request removal of defamatory information against them after its publication online.
