LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigerians has been urged to ignore the statement credited to Senator Isah Misau that the Nigerian Government set up the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) “to intimidate Politicians”.
In a press release on Wednesday in Abuja by the National Coordinator of United Young Professionals, Adewole Kehinde wondered if Senator Misau really enlisted in the Nigeria Police before becoming a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“There is need to do proper investigation to confirm that Senator Isah Misau really joined the Nigeria Police because his attitudes toward the Police Force does not show any sign of ever been a patriotic police man, Adewole said.
Adewole further reiterated that “How can a Senator who claimed to be a former Policeman now say that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) was set up to intimidate Politicians; that is an absurd of a sitting Senator”.
“May be Senator Misau need to tell Nigerians how he used the SARS; as a former Police officers, how he used the SARS personnel to intimidate his opponent, Adewole said.
“We need to remind Senator Misau that SARS has been in existence before the coming of IGP Ibrahim K. Idris as Inspector General of Police and he has done vigorous training and reforms in SARS aside the recent reorganization.
“It is a known fact that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is the section that handles robbery cases and answerable to the Commissioner of Police just as the Commissioner of Police is answerable to the Inspector General of Police.
“We commend the Senate President for mandating its Ad Hoc Committee on Security to investigate the allegations of Human Rights abuse by SARS, the statement concluded.
