JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – As Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks continue to rise dramatically in size, frequency and complexity, it has become clear that automation is now increasingly critical in protecting the network against these attacks.

This is according to Arbor Network’s territory manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, Bryan Hamman, who says, “Arbor has recently released a new version of its on-premise, always-on, inline DDoS detection and mitigation platform for enterprise customers, Arbor Networks APS, namely Arbor APS v5.11.

This latest version includes new features designed to reduce the time to attack mitigation, through improvements to its powerful Cloud Signaling capability, which is an integrated way of connecting on-premise and cloud-based DDoS mitigation.”

Hamman clarifies that Arbor’s Cloud Signaling capability automates key aspects of DDoS defence, tightly integrating on-premise and cloud-based mitigation. In addition, locally configured blacklists/ whitelists on the Arbor APS are now embedded in the Cloud Signaling communication.

Hamman adds, “An analysis of recent DDoS trends has shown that many DDoS attacks last for less than 30 minutes and are also increasing in complexity. They hit without warning, are large enough to affect your organisation and are over very quickly. Within this context, automation is a key requirement of your DDoS defence.”

The Arbor DDoS attack protection solution delivers intelligent integration between on-premise and in-cloud DDoS attack protection, backed by threat intelligence via the ATLAS Intelligence Feed (AIF).

Developed by Arbor’s Security Engineering and Response Team (ASERT), the AIF includes geolocation data and automates the identification of attacks against infrastructure and services from known botnets and malware, while ensuring that updates for new threats are automatically delivered without software upgrades.

“When your network is under attack, time is of the essence, and therefore automation is key to protection. Through its centralised management and enhanced Cloud Signaling, Arbor APS provides automated protection against known and emerging threats from the data centre to the cloud, offering intelligent and seamless connection between on premise and cloud protection,” concludes Hamman.
