ANGOLA – Not less than 17 football lovers have been killed and scores of others injured following a stampede at a stadium in the Angolan city of Uige.
It was a football match between top clubs in the first division, Santa Rita de Cassia and Recreativo do Libolo.
According to officials, the stampede occured when football lovers stormed the gate in their numbers after being refused entry into the stadium.
Eye Witnesses say those dead were those trampled upon in the ensuing milee as many sufforcated to death.
Officials added that the stadium would have been filled beyond the 8,000 capacity if they had access to the stadium.
“Some people had to walk on top of other people. There were 76 casualties, of whom 17 died,” Ernesto Luis, director general of the local hospital”, told Reuters
Five of the injured are reported to be in serious condition.The game ended in a 0-1 defeat for Santa Rita de Cassia.
