LAGOS, Nigeria – Robbers are now on rampage. They have devised new ways to rob in residential quarters in Lagos and neigbouring states just few days to Christmas.
The robbers we gathered pay visit to residential quarters, well dressed like businessmen when they know that the children will only be at home with a house help or a guardian.
A family, names withheld, who was robbed of a laptop in Ojodu, Lagos told our correspondent that a robber visited while the couples were at work, leaving their two kids at home in care of their grandmother. The robber who was well dressed in office attire rang the bell and told the old woman that Dammy’s mother asked him to wait for her in the flat.
While waiting, he told the unsuspecting grandmother that he is thirsty and would need some water. The grandmother, we gathered then took the two children in her care to the kitchen to fetch water, during which she tried to reach the mother of the two kids on phone.
She returned to the flat only to discover that the visitor has vanished with the lap top in the sitting. Another resident of the area also told of a similar incident how one of the robbers visited one of the flats in the same building at Muritala, two years back and told the house help that the TJ’s father asked that he wait for him in the house.
The house help we gathered opened the door and allowed him in, during which she tried unsuccessfully to reach the parents of the child. After sitting for a while, the strange visitor asked the house help to leave the boy with him and help to buy a recharge card next door.
It was then, it occurred to the house help that something was wrong, she refused. Knowing that the game was up, the visiting robber vanished under the guise of purchasing the recharge card.
One of those affected is advising parents to warn guardian of their kids never to open their doors to any unknown visitor but to turn them away without even opening the door or politely ask the visitor to request the parents to call directly to make the request.
