Lagos, Nigeria – At least 3 people were killed and properties worth several millions lost when a taker laden with 33,000 litres of diesel crashed into a truck carrying breweries product at Kara Bridge, along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway.
The incident which occurred at 3.08 am triggered heavy traffic jam which lingered on all day, forcing many to spend several hours in traffic.
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency at the scene said 2 containerized trucks were burnt, including 2 trailers, one tanker laden with 33,000 litres of diesel which caused and one Toyota Corolla. The three dead bodies were identified as all male adults.
“Investigation carried out at the scene of incident revealed that the tanker fully laden with AGO(diesel) 33,000 litres caught fire as the tanker ran into a truck carrying brewery products(beer) in high speed. The driver was said to have abruptly applied brake at the Kara Bridge outward Lagos resulting to multiple accident and fire outbreak with colossal loss”, General Manager of LASEMA, Mr. Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu said.
He added that his agency’s ERT alongside Lagos State Fire Service, RRS, FRSC, Nigeria Police, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps were responders at the scene.
According to him, the combined team combated the inferno and successfully put out the fire and prevented further loss and casualties/fatalities.
He said all affected vehicles burnt in the incident have been cleared from the road. He advised road users especially articulated truck drivers to avoid over speeding and adhere to safety regulations while plying the roads to avoid disasters
He said a full scale investigation on the incident would be carried out by appropriate authorities.
