Akpolokpolo Ewuare 11, the Oba of Benin

Benin, Nigeria, Oct 21, 2016 – Prince Eheneden Erediauwa was on Thursday crowned 39th Oba of Benin kingdom.
He has chosen to be addressed as Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku’ Akpolokpolo Ewuare 11. He is the second king to bear the name after Oba Ewuare 1 who ruled Benin Kingdom between 1440 and 1473.

The Oba was born in 1953 and was educated in Nigeria and UK. He holds a B.A in Economics and Sociology which he received from the University of Wales. He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of International affairs and married with three wives.


He was traditionally crowned at Usama palace by the Usama N’ Ihiron also known as the Edion led by Chief Oliha who was supported by other powerful rulers in the kingdom, including Edohen, Ezomo, Ero, Eholo N’ Ire, Oloton and Edaiken.

He thereafter visited a shrine at Iwehen junction to pay homage, walked through Ibiwe to Urho-Okpota where the crowning was officially performed by Chief Oliha of Benin.

Among the dignitaries present were the Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, his successor, Godwin Obaseki , Vice President Yemi Osibanjo and members of the international community.
Speaking after the coronation, the Oba implored government to include Edo language and Benin history in schools’ curriculum.
“I advise my Benin people to try to maintain our culture especially our language, by insisting on its use in communicating with their children and each other.

“We shall strive to ensure that conflicts are resolved between individuals, families and communities along the principles of social justice.




“We shall use cultural diplomacy as veritable tool for the promotion of harmonious relationship with our neighbours far and near.’’
“Our culture and tradition remain the one main factor that international community respect us for.

“While our people remain free to play politics by subscribing to any political party of their choice, we shall, however, continue to pray for and always support the right kind of political leaders. Who will safeguard the welfare of our people, provide for their basic needs and who will accord recognition to traditional institutions,” he said.
