Nigeria, Oct 12, 2016 – Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s work, Season of Crimson Blossoms was today announced as winner of the NLNG $100,000 prize for literature.
Ibrahim piece defeated ‘Born on Tuesday’ by Elnathan John and ‘Night Dancer’ by Chika Unigwe to win the $100 , 000 prize.
Season of Crimson Blossoms is a novel set in conservative northern Nigeria. It focuses on unusual love affairs between characters, as well as ambiguities in religion and politics. Published by Parresia Books, Season of Crimson Blossoms is Ibrahim’s debut novel. Ibrahim has won the BBC African Performance Prize and the Amatu Braide Prize for Prose. He is a Gabriel Garcia Marquez Fellow (2013) and a Civitella Ranieri Fellow (2015).
Speaking at a press conference today Professor Aye Banjo describes the winning piece, Season of Crimson Blossoms as skillful and sympathetic.
