London, Sept, 22, 2016 – An officer has been dismissed at a Special Case Misconduct hearing held on Thursday, 15 September by the Metropolitan Police Service.

At the hearing, PC Saijid Farooq of Westminster Borough was proven to have failed to meet the required standards of professional behaviour in respect of: ‘Honesty and Integrity’ and ‘Discreditable Conduct’.
This was a result of him receiving a penalty notice relating to the non payment of a fare on 19 January this year.

Having been stopped by a Revenue Protection Officer, PC Farooq gave false and misleading statements. The Revenue Protection Officer issued a Penalty Notice amounting to £179 for fare evasion which he paid.

Assistant Commissioner Helen King, Lead for Professionalism and Chair of the Hearing, said: “The public rightly expect the police to uphold the highest standards of honesty and integrity on and off duty and, in particular, to comply with the law that they are empowered to enforce on others.

“Although dealt with by a penalty notice, failing to buy a ticket could have been treated as a criminal matter. Such behaviour clearly falls far short of that required of police officers and, in these circumstances, cannot be treated as an isolated and honest mistake to learn from, in relation to remaining as an officer.

“Therefore the appropriate outcome is dismissal without notice,” MET police said in a statement.
