Nigeria, Sept, 04, 2016 – Civil right groups, Campaign for Constitutionalism and Human Rights(CCHR), Campaign Against Corruption and Bad Governance (CACOBAG) and Gani Fawehinmi Movement For a New Nigeria (GFMNN) have called on the Federal Government to immortalise late human rights activists, Chief Gani Fawehinmi by naming the headquarter of National Human Rights Commission in Abuja after him.

They also called on the Federal Government to name a federal university after the late human rights activist. According to the group, Gani’ s support for President Muhammad Buhari as a person in 2007 was not hidden.

“Gani s trust in Buhari to fight corruption was never in doubt. All states most especially states of the South West must also immortalise Gain, the man that sacrificed his life and everything he had to liberate people from shackles of poverty and oppression”, the group said.

They noted that the 7th memorial anniversary of Gani Fawehinmi, who died September 5, 2009 started few days ago with rallies , conferences and protests by various organisations at different locations.

They said the programme will be climaxed on Monday the 5th Day of September the day Gani died with lectures , symposia ,candle light procession, further parade by various organisations in various states of the federation and wreath laying at the tomb of Gani in Ondo by other groups as well as anniversary dinner’’, they said in a statement signed by Toyin Raheem, for CFHR, Sunday Ilorin for CACOBAG and Serum Bakare for GFMNN

The groups noted that the fanfare attached to the anniversary shows that Gani lives on. “He is still living with us and will continue to live with us as long as people still struggle for good governance ,to support and entrench democracy ,to fight against anti-democratic forces , against corruption ,against illegality and against all unconstitutional acts ,actions and laws’’, the group said.

It added that CCHR ,CACOBAG and GFMNN will on Monday 5th September , 2016 converge along with others at GRA Ikeja ,residence of Gani Fawehinmi from where they will move to the freedom square at Ojota.

“Gani is a giant that lives on and whose fight for the enthronement of democracy for a better standard of living for the working people of Nigeria and for free and qualitative education for all Nigerians cannot be over emphasised. Gani’s scholarship program which he started in his life time is still on seven years after his death”, the groups said.
