Akure, Nigeria, August 14, 2016 – Champions Rivers Angels suffered their first defeat in the 2016 Nigeria Women Premier League season after a 2-0 loss to homers Sunshine Queens in Akure on Saturday.
The Angels thought they had the lead in the 21st minute through Orji Chinwendu’s effort but the referee ruled it offside and the first half ended goalless.
On resumption of the second half, Yetunde Aluko managed a cross from outside the box that Ijeoma Obi guided into the net in the 59th minute to put Sunshine Queens ahead. Funsho Ogunrinola converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to ensure Rivers Angels lost their first match of the Premier League season.
Rivers Angels will be at home next weekend to Adamawa Queens.In other fixtures, Ibom Angels walked over Nasarawa Amazons while Osun Babes edged Edo Queens 2-1.
