Rio, August 19, 2016 – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today sanctioned three Russian athletes for testing positive to prohibited performance enhancing drugs at the Beijing 2008 Olympic and consequently disqualified from all the games they participated.

The affected athletes are Anastasia KAPACHINSKAYA, 36, Alexander POGORELOV, 36 and Ivan YUSHKOV, 35.
KAPACHINSKAYA of the Russian Federation competed in the women’s 400m and 4x400m relay event at the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008, in which she ranked 5th and 2nd with her teammates.

“Reanalysis of Kapachinskaya’s samples from Beijing 2008 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substances stanozolol and dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol). The IOC Disciplinary Commission, composed for this case of Denis Oswald (Chairman), Juan Antonio Samaranch and Ugur Erdener, decided that KAPACHINSKAYA is found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation and is disqualified from all the events in which she participated upon the occasion of the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008, namely, the women’s 400m and the women’s 4x400m relay. The committee consequently ordered the withdrawal of the medalist pin and the diplomas obtained in the women’s 400m and the women’s 4x400m relay.

“The Russian Federation Team is disqualified from the women’s 4x400m relay. The corresponding medals and diplomas are withdrawn and shall be returned”, the IOC said.

The Commission, composed for this case of Denis Oswald (Chairman), Juan Antonio Samaranch and Ugur Erdener also found Alexander POGORELOV guilty of anti-doping rule violation and disqualified him from the decathlon event in which he participated.

The commission requested the IAAF to modify the results of the above-mentioned event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence. The commission also found Ivan YUSHKOV, 35, of the Russian Federation, competing in athletics (shot put event) disqualified from the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008 in which he ranked 10th.

According to the IOC, reanalysis of Yushkov’s samples from Beijing 2008 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substances stanozolol, oxandrolone and dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol) and is thus disqualified from the shot put event in which he participated upon the occasion of the Olympic Games Beijing 2008.
