KI-MOON CALLS FOR CEASEFIRE, ARMS EMBARGO ON SOUTH SUDAN

New York, July 11, 2016 – Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Mr. Ban Ki-Moon has called on the Security Council to impose sanctions which include arms embargo on South Sudan, where about 127 people were reported to have been killed since hostility broke out last Friday.

The UN scribe who was speaking today in New York also called on President Salva Kii Mayardit of South Sudan and Vice President Riek Machar Dhurgon to do everything within their power to deescalate renewed violence in the region.

He said both leader have failed what they promised to offer those who voted them into power few months ago so soon and have led their nation into war. He also spoke of possibility of investigation of war crimes in South Sudan with the possibility of bringing perpetrators to book.

He expressed sadness over the death of those on peace mission that were killed due to the war and said that the UN will be sending additional troops which will be supplied by neighbouring nations to the conflict zone.

Ki-Moon spoke just as Spokesperson for the government of South Sudan, Mr. Ateny Wek Ateny said a ceasefire is already in place adding that the airport will be open by Tuesday for commencement of flight.

He said it is not true that the President is not in control of the army, adding that if the president gives the order, hostility will cease.
