Nigeria, June 9, 2016, The Federal Ministry of Interior and authorities of the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) have been called upon to expedite action to complete the Omoku Prison project.
Speaking to newsmen in omoku at the weekend , the coordinator of the Niger Delta Peace Initiative(NDPI), Comrade Josiah Usutu said that the completion of the Omoku Medium Prison will help in de-congesting the Port Harcourt prisons which he said is over congested with over 4,000 inmates as against 800 inmates.
He said Port Harcourt prisons is the most populated prison in Africa. Comrade Usutu therefore called for urgent action to complete the project without further delay.
He said the project when completed will go long way to create employment and other economic values for the people of the area.
Comrade Usutu also solicited for the rehabilitation of Ahoada, Degema, Elele and as well as Port Harcourt prisons adding that it will help in giving the inmates a sense of belonging.
He said prisons are for reformation and correction of behaviour and not for punishment as many people want to say or believe.
