6 DEAD, 22 INJURED IN LAGOS ACCIDENTS

Nigeria, June 17, 2016 – Not less than 6 people have been confirmed dead in two Lagos accidents, while 22 others were rescued alive but with severe injuries.

Both accidents occurred along the Third Mainland Bridge. The first involved a Mazda commercial bus with reg. no. AKD 292 XL coming from Aja Lekki en route Oshodi which rammed into a broken down MAN truck at about 10.24 P.M yesterday 15/6/2016 at 3rd Mainland bridge inward Oworonshoki.

We gathered that 5 victims (adult males) were trapped on impact with the truck and were recovered dead, while six others were rescued alive. A similar incident occurred at about 3.35 a.m today 16/6/2016 at Alapere inward toll gate involving a Volkswagen commercial bus with 18 passengers coming from the Island en route Mile 12 which and tumbled with 17 persons on board.

Speaking on the incident, General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency(LASEMA), Mr. Michael Akindele said the 22 people rescued alive with severe injuries and were taken to Accident and Emergency Centre (Trauma Centre)and Gbagada General Hospital adding that the dead bodies were also evacuated by SEHMU to Mainland Hospital Mortuary.
He said the dead body of driver of the commercial Bus was released at the request of the family members and friends through the intervention of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police who was present at the scene of the accident.

‘’The Truck which caused the accident was also set ablaze by angry mobs who were upset that the truck was abandoned on the road’’, he said adding that the officials of the Lagos State Fire service were able to put out the fire.

Akindele commiserated with families of the dead victims and also advised motorist, especially late night drivers to always take extreme caution while driving at night to avoid incidents leading to loss of live.

He also commended the quick intervention of the Lagos State police command on the incidents.
