Abuja, May 9, 2016 – The President of Nigeria Football Federation, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick, the 1st Vice President, Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi and the General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi are on their way to Mexico City for the 66th Congress of the world football –governing body, FIFA.
Mexico’s picturesque and historical capital city will play host to nearly one thousand very important personalities in world football on Thursday and Friday this week.
NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire told thenff.com on Monday: “Every FA President of the 209 members of FIFA is presently on the way to Mexico City. They are specially invited by FIFA alongside their Vice President and General Secretary. Nigeria’s Amaju Melvin Pinnick, Seyi Akinwunmi and Mohammed Sanusi are on their way as we speak.”
The 66th FIFA Congress will start at 9.30am Mexico time on Friday, at the Centro Banamex. The Congress will bring all 209 Member Associations up to speed on governance reforms approved by the Extraordinary Congress of 26th February 2016 and FIFA’s plans to enhance football development.
Friday’s Congress will be the first to be presided over by new FIFA president Gianni Infantino, elected at the Extraordinary Congress of 26th February. It is also the first meeting under the revised FIFA Statutes that came into effect on 27th April.
Infantino told the fifa.com: “Following the approval of the revised Statutes, the FIFA Congress is a key milestone in our commitment to put the reforms into action and lead FIFA and football forward. An important part of FIFA’s recovery is to engage with the football world, including former top players. After going through some uneasy times, I truly believe that the organization is on the verge of an exciting new era and that we can unite to work towards our common goal of developing football across the globe and at all levels.”
