Nigeria, April 22, 2016 – Management of the Lagos State University(LASU) has said that contrary to reports in the media, no professor has been forced to retire from the school and that there was no crisis arising from what it called routine retirement.

In a statement, management of the university said that the headline in Guardian newspaper that crisis brews in LASU was nothing but a figment of imagination of the reporter.
In the statement signed by Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr. Lewis, Akinwumi Oladapo, the school said there is nothing like fresh crisis at LASU.

“No Professor was forced into retirement and none had complained to the University Management. The decision, a reminder, is a normal routine, taken in line with the subsisting law establishing Lagos State University; The extant law at LASU for retirement of Professors is Sixty-Five [65] years; so, the word morale at its “lowest ebb”, as written by the reporter is untrue, misplaced and uncalled for”, the statement noted, adding that presently, the students of the University are writing their Harmattan [1st] Semester Examinations for the 2015/2016 Academic Session and that all the unions, ASUU, SSANU, NAAT and NASU have made their presentations on the retirement age, as it affects their members, to the Lagos State Government.

“The issue has not in any way degenerated into crisis within the University Community as falsely claimed by the reporter”, it said, adding that it is rather unfortunate that the reporter was not only sensational, but did not confirm the story while discharging his responsibilities in this regard. The story was simply a figment of his wild imagination”, it noted.

The management emphasised that there is no crisis and that with the new mantra of the current administration which is hinged on “inclusive governance”, issues are discussed and internally resolved without recourse, to a third party.

“Lagos State University hopes that our Media Friends would always be circumspect in the discharge of their duties and also ensure the veracity of any news items before publishing same in order to protect their hard earned reputation. For emphasis, Lagos State University Management wishes to inform the University Community and the general public that the story in its entirety was unfounded, baseless and should be treated with no substance”, it noted.
