Nigeria, March 31, 2016 – The Lagos State Government has issued a 7-day notice to some erring markets and business locations to comply with the State’s Environmental Law or risk closure.

The markets include Sura, Itafaji, Oke-Odo, Sangrouse, Bariga, Ajah Ultra-Modern, Agbalaka, Aiyetoro, Sabo and Ita-elewa in Ikorodu among others.

Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare disclosed this during a monthly press briefing at his office in Alausa-Ikeja, lamenting that despite continuous advocacy, enlightenment and appeals by market leaders, some traders still indulge in violating the state extant laws on environment.

He said that the state could no longer allow some bad eggs in the society hiding under the guise of making a living to compromise the health and safety of many law abiding Lagosians who may unjustly suffer the negative consequence of environmental pollution and degradation.

The Commissioner noted that the government is determined to maintain sanity in markets being defaced with shanties and illegal structures like attachments to tenements and containers, warning that failure to remove them before the expiration date of the notice will attract severe penalty and closure.
