Istanbul, Turkey, March 5, 2016 – Loyal readers of Zaman Newspapers are protesting the decision of government to take over the newspaper, considered as one of the oldest in Turkey.
Arise News , which has resumed transmission reported today that security forces raided the newspaper, few hours after a court ruled, placing it under government control.
But managers of the newspaper were able to get the Saturday edition out into the street. The protesters who gathered in group condemning government’s decision were dispersed with water and canisters.
The paper, said to be linked with the Hizmet movement of an influential US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, has been branded by Turkey as a “terrorist” group aiming to overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government.
