Nigeria, March 15, 2016 – Professor Anthony Kila of the Centre for International and Advanced Professional Studies (CIAPS) has declared that “information is everything” in today’s modern world as humans depend on information to thrive and excel in various fields of endeavour.

Kila observed that since human beings are political animals, everyone would certainly be interested in political communication which deals with the production, dissemination, process and effects of information both through media and interpersonally.

He made the observation in a presentation tagged “Governance and Communication in the Information Age”, at the Two-Day management retreat, organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy.

According to Kila, social scientists have classified our world from Stone age, Agricultural age, Industrial age and currently Information age, a period in human history characterized by the shift from traditional industry which the industrial revolution brought through industrialization to an economy state based on information and computerization.

He emphasized that the growth of internet users in Nigeria from 200,000 in Year 2000 to 51 million in 2015 underscores the importance of information among the growing populace, especially the young generation, adding that Nigeria ranks 9th position on the list of the highest internet users in the world.

Kila implored the participants to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the social media to communicate and disseminate information on the state government policies and programmes for effective impact on the target audience.
In his remarks at the opening ceremony, the Commissioner in the Ministry, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, stated that it is a new dawn for all information managers in the state as the present administration is ready to support and encourage them to deliver their statutory responsibilities effectively and efficiently.

He however charged them to speak with one voice as all hands must be on deck to ensure that the policy and programmes of the government are communicated to Lagosians regularly, especially as the State is set to celebrate the golden anniversary of its creation next year.

Ayorinde implored the participants to be well informed as well as keep up with advancement in Information Technology, particularly as it concerns the social media, adding that this must be incorporated into their daily activities.
