December 23, 2015 – Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has advised motorists to be conscious of foggy weather associated with morning and late evening during the harmattan.

Speaking today in his office, General Manager Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Mr. Michael Akindele explained that visibility is also affected because of the early morning haze adding that every road user must be safety conscious by adjusting their driving to meet the conditions of the bad weather on the road, desist from driving with high beams which heighten poor visibility of other road users.

The General Manager reminded motorists of the need to embark on routine check of their vehicles before entering the road.

“Aside from the wipers, brakes, non-defective windscreen and functional lights, it is also instructive to check radiators for water, and all the tyres. Car owners should also avoid Tokunbo or worn-out tyres (expired tyres) and to keep the vehicle engine within normal range”, he said.

He advised Lagosians to adopt precautionary measures to avoid fire incidents that could have disastrous consequences.

“They should avoid storage of highly inflammable materials such as petrol and kerosene, electrical appliances should also be switched off whenever they are not in use, avoid bush burning and lightening of bangers and knockouts”, all these the General Manager said can cause fire outbreak, which most times leads to unnecessary loss of lives and properties”

Akindele equally stressed the importance of security at this period and the need to be vigilant by monitoring strange movement and any other things that may likely create danger by reporting such incidents to the security operatives as well as calling the emergency numbers 767 or 112 toll free from any mobile telecommunication network.

He noted that in order to ensure sanity on the highways, law enforcement operatives have all been put on red alert to arrest and prosecute traffic offenders such as those driving against traffic, overloading, under-age driving, speed limit violation, usage of mobile phone while driving, non-use of seat belt and other traffic/ criminal offences.
