November 7, 2015 – At least four children have been confirmed dead as a result of mudslide occasioned by early morning rain in Lagos, Nigeria.
The incident according to officials of the Lagos State Emergency Agency(LASEMA) occurred at 4:50AM today at House 50 Otun Araromi Street, Orisa, Magodo, behind Magodo Phase 1, Lagos.
The dead according to General Manager, LASEMA, Mr. Michael Akindele are Sayo Odia(23), Clinton Odia, 13, Dasilva Odia, 15, and Olivia Odia, all children of Mr. Godwin Odia, (50), who could not be consoled at the time of filing the report.
He said that the four people dead have been buried in a nearby cemetery. The incident according to him, occurred just 6 houses away from a similar mudslide in the area that hit another bungalow at 10:35 PM but that all the resident escaped before the mudslide hit the building.
The LASEMA boss said his agency has been warning those living in flood-prone area to vacate due to an impending rainfall, adding that the area affected was a low land and prone to flood.
He said the corpses were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Isheri and taken to the cemetery in Lagos state agency van for burial. He said that all relevant government agencies including, Lagos State Fire Service and others were involved in the rescue operation.
