November 9, 2015 – Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria Ltd., Mr. Sifiso Dabengwa has resigned. His resignation was announced by MTN Group on the floor of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
According to the statement released by the South African telecommunications giant, Dabengwa tendered his resignation in the interest of the company and the Nigerian stakeholders.
Dabengwa was in charge when the Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC) fined MTN Nigeria $5.2 billion for SIM registration infraction.
“Due to the most unfortunate circumstances occurring at MTN Nigeria, I, in the interest of the company and its stakeholders tendered my resignation with immediate effect.
He will be replaced in the interim by Phuthuma Nhleko, a Non- Executive director who is assuming duties as Executive Chairman for the next six months.
“I will proactively deal with the Nigerian regulator and will continue to work with them in addressing the issues around unregistered subscribers as a matter of urgency”, he said.
The statement added that Allan Van Biljon will serve as lead independent director.
“Together with the MTN board, my second priority will be to find an appropriate Chief Executive Officer to take MTN forward . I will then revert to my Non-Executive director role”, Nhleko said in the statement.
