BUHARI RESTATES COMMITMENT TO FAIR POLLS, WANT OFFENDERS PROSECUTED

November 10, 2015 – President Muhammadu Buhari has restated his commitment to free and fair election both at the national and at the local government level.

The President who was speaking at the inauguration of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Mahmood Yakubu and his commissioners, said he will not interfere with their duties as umpire in an election.

I have pledged my commitment to free, fair and credible election. “ I stand by that he”, he told INEC chairman and his commissioners.

He appealed to them to respect the wish of the people adding that it is not enough for election to be cancelled but that those who are responsible for electoral fraud, whether they are individual, institutions or political parties must be prosecuted to serve as deterrent.

He equally called for prosecution of those who are responsible for electoral violence, thuggery and others prohibited by the electoral act to be brought to book.

“It is not enough to cancel an election. Those who are responsible for perpetration of electoral fraud and electoral violence must prosecuted.

Those sworn-in along with the INEC chairman are Mrs. Amina Zakari, Mr. Solomon Adedeji Soyebi, Prof. Antonia Taiye Okoosi-Simbine, Dr. Muhammed Mustafa Lecky and Alhaji Baba Shettima Arfo
