October 24, 2015 – Vice President of Maldives, Mr. Ahmed Adeeb has been arrested over attempt to assassinate President of the country, Mr. Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
According to Sky News, monitored in Lagos, the Vice President was arrested in connection with the September 28 explosion that hit President Gayoom’s speedboat on his way from Holly Pilgrimage in Mecca.
In that blast, the President escaped unhurt while his wife, and aide and a body guard were injured in the explosion.Adeeb was arrested in Maldives on his return from official visit to China, Police Spokesman, Ismail Ali told the television station. Three soldiers and former member of Adeeb’s security have also been arrested in connection with the blast.
He said that Adeeb has been taken to a detention centre. There are indication that the Vice President will be made to face treason charges in the next few days.
For instance, Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Umar Naseer confirmed this on his tweeter page that the Vice President will face High Treason charges.
