October 27, 2015 – The Supreme Court sitting in Abuja, today dashed the only hope of Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike, who had appealed the decision of the Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal to sit in Abuja instead of Rivers State.
The Supreme Court dismissed Wike’s application and held that there were serious security challenges that warranted relocation of the Tribunal in accordance with provisions of the constitution.
It also ruled that the Tribunal is properly constituted. The Supreme Court judgement is coming just two days after the Rivers State House of Assembly Tribunal upturned the election of 21 lawmakers in Rivers State, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) including that of the Speaker, Hon. Owaji Ibani and three days after the Rivers State Governorship Tribunal also upturned the election of Wike and ordered a rerun of the April 14 general election that brought Wike to power.
Wike has however appealed the Governorship Tribunal judgement that nullified his election few days ago.
