October 24, 2015 – The Lagos State Government has hinted that it may deploy drones as part of efforts to effectively monitor developments and collect data in the state.

Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Olufemi Odubiyi made the revelation while speaking to reporters in Lagos.
“The use of unmanned drones to effectively receive updates and monitor developments in a megacity of our size may also not be out of place’’, he said.

Odubiyi announced that there is an urgent need to upgrade and add to the existing 1,000 CCTV cameras in the state to compliment the other crime prevention initiatives of the government which includes the Security Trust Fund, Street Signage, House Numbering and the provision of three-digit number for emergency calls.

He said the present administration is set to deploy technology to dispassionately drive efficient allocation and development of resources adding that his ministry will soon embark on the re-configuration of the Enterprise GIS platform to make it more user-friendly, accommodate all government agencies, thereby enhancing informed decision making and better citizen-government relations.

He averred that the State Government, through his ministry will partner with Price Water House Coopers to manage the state’s Integrated Land Administration Automatic System in a manner that encourages investors and the secondary mortgage market, improve property tax collection, enhanced revenue profile and make land in the state bankable and usable as reliable security instrument.

He noted that he is working on a Two-Day Information Technology Stakeholders’ Summit to get the buy-in of the major global and local IT players, like the Telecommunication Companies and Banks which now have to operate the Treasury Single Account and Billing systems.
