October 7, 2015 – The Lagos State Government has said that it will soon crush about 1, 720 motorcycles, otherwise called Okada that were seized from the owners for playing restricted routes.
Chairman, Lagos State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences, Mr. Olubukola Abe who made the revelation in Lagos said the motorcycles were seized because the riders contravened Lagos State Traffic Law, 2012 by riding on restricted routes.
He said the motorcycles will be crushed and that they cannot be auctioned since they will find their ways back to the road again. He explained that restricting Okada to certain routes has reduced the rate of crime and accidents in the state.
Abe said that no fewer than 1,920 miscreant arrested in the last quarter have been successfully prosecuted in the law courts.
He said that 2,127 were initially arrested out of which 162 were screened out while 55 were discharged in accordance with the law but that 1,920 were convicted for various offences.
He observed that activities of the agency are being tinted towards making sure that the environment is secured for social and economic development.
He emphasized that street trading is prohibited across the state adding that street trading accounts for most of the traffic gridlocks in Lagos.
He urged motorists to desist from patronizing street traders in traffic in order to reduce human hours wasted on the roads.
