September 8, 2015 – Former member of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has stressed the need for the United Nations(UN) to take urgent steps to end the issue of migrants dying in the process of crossing to Europe.
She said it was sad that hundreds of innocent people around the world have perished in the last few weeks looking for safer place due to wars and economic crisis in their countries.
She also asked the federal government to look into the sad stories of Nigerians who have continued to lose their lives in the deserts while embarking on a difficult journey to European countries for greener pasture.
While speaking yesterday on the state of Diaspora and Gender relation in the 21st century at the University of Ibadan, the former federal lawmaker said the time is now for the country to establish the Diaspora Commission.
According to her, the setting up of the commission will ensure a proper database of Nigerians in Diaspora, provide avenue to solve their challenges and how best they can be useful to the development of the country back home.
She regretted that several calls she made in the past on the need to nip in the bud migrant’s crisis were ignored.
