June 16, 2015 – The United States of America has killed a senior Al-Qaeda leader, Nasser al-Wuhayshi, who operates in the Arabian Peninsula. He was killed in a US drone strike in Yemen.
Al-Qaeda announced his death in an online video and named his successor as chief Qasim al-Raymi. Wuhayshi, a former private secretary to the late Osama Bin Laden is perceived as Al-Qaeda second in command.
“We in al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula mourn to our Muslim nation… that Abu Baseer Nasser bin Abdul Karim al-Wuhayshi, may God have mercy on his soul, passed away in an American strike which targeted him along with two of his mujahideen brothers,” Khaled Batarfi, a senior member of the group, said in the video.
The Pentagon is yet to comment on this recent development.
