March 3, 2015 – Lagos State government on Tuesday handed over nine roads to communities in Maidan-Aina-Agiliti area of Mile 12 in Kosofe Local Government Area .
The 9 roads accumulates to 3.1 kilometres with a bridge, service duct, walkways and streetlights. Speaking at the event, Chairman, Joint Community Development Association (CDA) Agiliti described the project as a great relief to the community adding that residents have been subjected to untold hardship in the last 50 years as a result of the bad terrain and that efforts by different associations to assist was unsuccessful.
Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat recalled that the situation was so bad in 2007 that the residents appealed for temporary solution and jetty to at least make the route motorable.
He said the 9 roads include Maidan-Aina-Agiliti road of 1800m by 15.6m; Oremerin/Ibikunle road (503m); Oniyanrin road (438m); Ajanlekoko-Oluwo road (75m); Adeyeye road (273m) and By-pass road (350m). Hamzat added that the bridge (300m) has 364 piles installed in it and is expected to last 300 years.
While handing over the project, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, said the project was an evidence of government’s slum regeneration and urban renewal plan.
“I was here in 2007 and this place was taken over by flood after a downpour. The only source of movement from Kosofe to Maidan is by canoe. You were all very unhappy and asked for culvert and jetty. I said no, since you pay your taxes, I promised to give you a first-class bridge and you have it today.
This is for me the value of democracy, where you can hold politicians accountable for their promises,” he said, and appealed to politicians to always keep their promises.
Executive Secretary of Kosofe LGA, Afolabi Bamise thanked the state government for the project and promised to collaborate with the ministry of works and infrastructure for proper maintenance of the roads.
