Lagos House to Compel Fashola to Provide Bicycle Lanes for Riders

Riding bicycle for economic reasons

December 26, 2014 – Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have vowed to move a motion on the floor of the House to compel the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola to provide bicycle lanes for riders as part of effort to eliminate pollution and minimize traffic congestion in the state.

Chairman House Committee on Transport, Commerce and Industry, Hon. Bisi Yusuf made the observation when member of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) paid a courtesy call to the Lagos State House of Assembly in Alausa, Ikeja.

He said that the motion will demand that the state government provide bicycle lanes for riders adding that lawmakers in the state are willing to join the FRSC in the campaign to institute bicycle riding as part of effort to eliminate pollution and traffic congestion.

Clerk of the House, Mr. Ganiyu Abiru said the campaign for use of bicycle is coming at a crucial time when there is need to have an alternative means of transportation. He added that the use of bicycle can reduce stress and health hazard confronting road users. “We should start from somewhere not waiting for the bicycle tracks”, he said.

Speaking at the ceremony Zonal Commanding Officer FRSC, Mr. Godwin Ogagaoghene said his team visited as part of National Bicycle week adding that the theme for this year is “Cycling to save the planet”.

He said cycling will reduce vehicles in use, pollution, mortality and congestion on the road, adding that Houses Of Assembly are best endowed to make government provide tracks for safe-riding of bicycle due to inherent economic benefit.
