December 10, 2014 – Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Abdul Jelili Adesiyan, has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would curtail activities of the radical Islamic Sect Boko Haram, before the general election based on successes recorded so far.

In a statement, Chief Press Secretary to the Minister, Mr. Wale Akinola said that contrary to people’s belief that the insurgency would hamper the conduct of the next general elections, especially in the North eastern part of the country, the elections would be held peacefully in the areas and other parts of the country.

“Since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that elections will be held across the country, including Yobe, Borno and Adamawa, I want to reaffirm that the federal government is making concerted efforts to ensure that the spate of killings and bombings in the Northern part of the country become a thing of the past before the conduct of the general election slated to hold next year February.”

He, however, berated the All Progressives Congress (APC) for alleging that the FG is conniving with the insurgents to destabilise the North east ahead of the 2015 general election, describing the statement as irresponsible, uncouth and reckless.

“It is highly irresponsible of any individual, group or opposition to accuse the federal government of conniving with Boko Haram to destabilize the North east ahead of the 2015 general election. It is quite unimaginable for any individual or group to make such utterance all because they want to hijack power at all cost.

“It is quite unfortunate that the opposition is taking fore-granted President Goodluck Jonathan’s simplicity and being humane in dealing with issues. The President is making frantic effort to ensure that all Nigerians live in peace and harmony”, adding that the President had said several times that his reelection is not worth the blood of a single Nigeria.

How can a President who toils day and night to see that insurgent activities are nipped in the bud be conniving with the same group? I remembered that when there was crisis in Ekiti during former President Obasanjo’s administration, the governor was sacked and he appointed sole administrator for the state, but President Jonathan did not do that in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa because he believes such action will be against the basic tenet of democracy.

The opposition should learn to appreciate President Jonathan for his great achievements since he assumed office as the number one citizen of the country rather than heating the polity through propaganda.
