November 8, 2014 – The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has rolled out names of the first beneficiary of the NUJ Educational Grant.
The first beneficiary were handed their cheque at the November congress held today in Lagos. The beneficiary are Mr. Kasali Akinwale of Source Magazine and Atukpa Grace of Business Plus.
Akinwale received N25, 000 while Atukpa got N25,000 additional N10,000 cash.
Speaking on the addition of the N10,000 to that of Atukpa, Chairman NUJ Lagos, Mr. Deji Elumoye said Atukpa is physically challenged, (she has lost her sight) and yet she was determined to be a qualified journalist. He said N10,000 was added to her grant to encourage her and many in her situation to further their education.
Under the NUJ Educational Grant, practicing journalists who are members but without requisite qualification are entitled to N25, 000 grant to enable them pursue a course in journalism or mass communication so as to qualify them for NUJ elections.
To qualify for the grant, members must present certificate of admission and clearance letter from their chapter.
