November 20, 2014 – Senate President, David Mark has shut down the Senate as the two houses were thrown into commotion on Thursday morning in attempt to sit over recent request by President Goodluck Jonathan to extend State of Emergency in North-eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

These states have been under emergency rule in the last 12 months. Debate on the issue has been deadlock in the last two days with Senate not able to approve the request.

Our correspondent reported that Speaker of the House, Hon. Aminu Tambuwa was prevented from driving into the complex of the National
Assembly. forcing him to come down.

He introduced himself as Speaker House of Representative and was allowed in after some time but his colleagues were locked out.

Led by Minority Leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the lawmakers scaled the fence into the complex but where teargassed midway as the approached the main building.

Those affected by the fumes were however rushed with ambulance to the Hospital.

Reacting at the development, President of the Senate, Mr. David Mark shut down the National Assembly and described the incident as very unfortunate.

Senator George Akume, Benue said the heavy presence of the security forces was uncalled for.

The house however resumed but the Speaker later adjourned proceedings till December 3rd, 2014.
