Editor of Sunday Independent, one of Nigeria’s widely read daily newspaper, Mr. Habib Aruna has resigned. Mr. Onche Odeh has been appointed as Editor of the newspaper.

It is not clear why Aruna resigned but he appeared to have left the organisation a happy man. However sources told our reporter that management was unhappy with the way he uses the newspaper to promote the opposition.

Daily Independent was set up by Chief James Onanefe Ibori, who became governor of Delta State using the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) as a platform.

We gathered that management felt that the best way to stop him from continuously using the paper to promote the opposition at the expense of the PDP was becoming unbearable. He was subsequently Appointed Editor Special Assignment, a position he felt would take him away from mainstream journalism.

We gathered that Aruna was one of the editors that narrowly escaped the hammer when, Editor-In-Chief of the newspaper, Mr. Ted Iwere returned to the organisation as part of his reform.

Aruna joined Daily Independent as a correspondent and rose through the ranks to that position. He was Political Editor and later News Editor before he was promoted as Editor Sunday Independent.
