November 4, 2014 – Lagos State Government has called on residents of the state to embark on civil disobedience against officials of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency FERMA/Federal SURE-P Taskforce who took over federal roads in Lagos for the purpose of controlling traffic.
Fashola who spoke at the 5th anniversary of Uniformed Voluntary Clubs in Lagos described the taskforce as an illegal agency set up by the Federal Government three months before election in a wanton desperation to win elections.
He said the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) ought to have been invested on roads such as the Oshodi/Apapa Expressway adding that investment in the taskforce was a negation of the promise President Goodluck Jonathan made that the money would be used to improve the lives of Nigerians.
“So you see how it has been improving our lives. The money should have been spent on roads, Apapa Oshodi is one of them, that is where SURE-P money should have been invested not to dissipate it into political organisation in a very wanton desperation to win elections”, he said adding that the same method was used in 2006 but failed to yield the desired results.
“This is the method that has been tried before, it was tried in 2006 and it did not produce any result, the result it produced is that they were roundly defeated, so if you go into what does not work, we will not be provoked, we expect that in time reasons will prevail. They have no right to manage traffic the only agency authorized to manage traffic in Lagos is LASTMA and FRSC on federal roads, and citizens should just resist them and refuse to cooperate with them”, he said.
On expiration of local government tenure in Lagos and the direction to hand over to council managers, Fashola said government is in the process of conducting voter registration update and ward delineation adding that it is only when the exercise is completed that elections would he held.
In the meantime, he said will constitute a transitional council to manage the local governments pending when the state will be able to hold elections.
“We are in the process of conducting voters registration update exercise and ward delineation and all of those things preparatory to holding elections, so there is a transitional period during which I will constitute a transitional council to manage local governments until when we can hold elections”, he said.
