Texas Nurse Tests Positive to Ebola Virus Disease in US

October 12, 2014 – A Texas nurse who treated Thomas Eric Duncan, the first American to die after being infected by the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has been infected.

Director Centre for Disease Control in the US, Dr. Tom Frieden said the nurse contracted the ailment after a breach of protocol and that the nurse had extensive contact with Duncan on a number of occasion.

“At some point, there was a breach in protocol, and that breach in protocol resulted in this infection. The (Ebola treatment) protocols work. … But we know that even a single lapse or breach can result in infection, ” he said at a news conference.

He said that the cause of the breach is being investigated adding that none of the 50 people under observation have shown signs of fever or any other sign of Ebola.

“We knew a second case could be a reality, and we’ve been preparing for this possibility. We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread.” Texas Health Commissioner. Dr. David Lakey said after the incident.
