October 10, 2010 – Lagos State Government has set up Energy Academy to train youths on production and maintenance of issues related to energy in the state.

General Manager, Lagos State Electricity Board, Mr. Damilola Ogunbiyi made the revelation while speaking at an interactive session put together by the Lagos State Governor Office Correspondent(LAGOCO) as part of activities to mark their press week.

She said that the academy is ready and would be formally open for operation during the Lagos State Energy Month which will feature the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola.

Speaking through Engineer Babatunde Junaid, a director in the agency, Ogunbiyi said the Lagos State Electricity Board is currently putting solar powered lights in 32 schools in the rural areas of Lagos state adding that the project is co-sponsored by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

She said the agency has also provided solar power electricity to some settlement in Ijora and that the agency is now expanding into other areas like Iyano Ipaja in Alimosho, Agege and Oshodi-Apapa area.

She explained that since Alausa Power Plant was put into use, power supply has improved in the area attributing some of the hitches experienced to shortage of natural gas supply.

She explained that unlike the Island Independent Power Plant, the Alausa Power Plant is powered by direct supply of natural gas.

Ogunbiyi said that the Island IPP has been very effective supplying power to the environment but that it is powered by compressed gas which she said is easy to get through proper management unlike natural gas than can be sabotage by vandals leading to power failure.

She revealed that the Island IPP powers all the street lightings in Ijora. In a related development, members of the Lagos State Governors Office Correspondent also visited Old peoples home Yaba, where they donated food items including bags of rice and toiletries to members of the home.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mrs. Titi Adeaga said the donation was the contribution of the group to the wellbeing of the elderly in the society.
