August 3, 2014 – At least one hundred and sixty (160) people have been killed and 87 others injured when an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hit Yunnan Province, China.
However the US Geological Survey has estimated the quake to be 6.1 on the Richter scale contrary to the China Earthquake Networks Center which puts it at 6.5.
China state media said the quake struck 11 kilometers west-northwest of the town of Yunnan Province in Ludian county.
“I felt a strong jolt on my fifth-floor home and some small objects in my home fell off the shelves,” a resident in the county seat of Ludian told Xinhua.
The quake is said to have caused massive cracks tearing buildings. CCTV reported that the sound was so loud that it forced a lot of people into the streets. So far government officials are currently on sight on rescue mission while those injured have been taken to hospital for treatment.
