July 22, 2014 – Airlines in United States and Europe on Tuesday suspended flights to Ben Gurion Airport after Hamas’ long range rocket landed in Israel about 1.6 kilo metres away from Gaza.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered three US carriers that fly to Israel – Delta, United and US Airways – to halt flights for 24 hours, while in Europe aviation regulator also cancelled flights to Tel Aviv.

This new development is however creating tension in Israel even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has launched an appeal for resumption of flights to Israel, with officials of transport ministry saying that the “Ben Gurion Airport is safe and completely guarded and that there is no reason whatsoever for American companies to stop flight into Israel.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said it “strongly recommends” that airlines should avoid operating to and from Tel Aviv.

Meanwhile fighting has intensified with the Palestinian death toll hitting 621, including 100 children and many other civilians.

The latest strikes killed a six-month-old infant, a 62-year-old man and three other men riding on motorcycles in southern Gaza, Palestinian health officials have said.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military said it had killed at least 183 militants while 27 Israeli soldiers are confirmed to have been killed by Hamas.
