July 13, 2014 – Though disappointed that he could not help his national team, Argentina to win the World Cup in Brazil, Lionel Messi, the Argentine Striker emerged the most valuable player of the tournament, winning the golden booth out of ten shortlisted for the prize.
Messi defeated the likes of Angel Di Maria, Mats Hummels, Toni Kroos, Philipp Lahm, Javier Mascherano, Thomas Mueller, Neymar, Arjen Robben and James Rodriguez to clinch the prize.
Messi scored four goals in the tournament, 1 against Bosnia, 1 against Iran and 2 against Nigeria.
While the German goal keeper Manuel Neuer, won Golden Glove Award.
The shortlist was drawn up by the members of FIFA’s Technical Study Group, who have been casting their expert eyes over each and every one of the matches held at Brazil 2014 to date,” Federation of International Football, FIFA said in a statement.
